The Famous Maroon Bells Fall Foliage
November 17, 2016

I spent a lot of time this fall chasing down the changing foliage throughout Colorado and essentially ticking off some photography goals that I had. One of those goals was to get back down to the Maroon Bells with the changing colors. Outside of Aspen, the Maroon Bells (Maroon Bells Lake) is arguably one of the most magical spots in Colorado and because of the easy access, it’s the most photographed scene in the state. On a total whim, I had photographed the location back in 2010 when I was pretty brand new to photography and when I had my first camera, a Nikon D60. One of the shots I got that fine morning turned out to be one of my personal favorites and of course now one of my most requested prints. However, since I shot the scene with a Nikon D60, due to its sensor size, I’m not comfortable delivering delivering prints at some of the requested sizing so I’ve actually had to turn down business.

I don’t like to turn down business…

Trip 1: I watched the weather and with the hopes of some clouds and fresh snow, I ended up driving down on a Monday night to shoot sunset, sleep my car, shoot sunrise, and be at work by 10. Unfortunately the light never cooperated – the peaks were socked in for sunset, cleared all night, and got socked in again for sunrise…

Trip 2: Since that first trip was kind of a bust, I went back a week-or-so later with the same plan – shoot sunset, sleep my car, shoot sunrise, and be at work by 10. Sunset was nothing special (man, I’m a snob…), but I think finally got what I needed.

And I’ll probably go back next fall too…
